Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a sophisticated scanning system that produces highly detailed images of the eye. Often likened to an MRI of the eye, an OCT scan allows us to view 3D, cross-sectional images of the retina, the innermost layers of your eyes but in a much higher resolution than either MRI or ulstrasound can produce. By using this cutting edge technology, we can more accurately identify, monitor and treat many sight threatening ocular conditions including:
- Macular degeneration – assessment of dry versus wet type
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular holes and vitreous traction
- Plaquinol screening
Somerville and Merrin offer this highly advanced scan at both of our practices. It takes just minutes to complete, and in most cases no drops or preparation are required. We will store your OCT images electronically so we can use for comparison at future visits to monitor any changes over time. Where appropriate we can also provide results to other medical practitioners involved in your health management.
