Polarised Vs Non-Polarised Sunglasses - Which Should I Choose?

October 23, 2025

Summer is just around the corner, and that means longer days, bright skies, and plenty of sunshine.

It’s the perfect time to make sure your eyes are ready too — with stylish, protective prescription sunglasses from Somerville & Merrin Optometrists.

If you’ve ever wondered what makes polarised sunglasses different from regular ones, you’re not alone! Here’s everything you need to know before choosing your next pair.

What Are Polarised Lenses?

Polarised lenses are specially designed to reduce glare — that harsh, reflective light that bounces off water, car bonnets, and roads. Glare can make it difficult to see clearly and can quickly cause eye strain or fatigue.

By filtering out this reflected light, polarised lenses help you enjoy:

  • Sharper, clearer vision with improved contrast
  • Reduced glare for driving and outdoor activities
  • Vibrant, true-to-life colours
  • Less squinting and more comfort in bright sunlight

They’re ideal for anyone who spends time driving, fishing, boating, or simply soaking up the sunshine.

What About Non-Polarised Sunglasses?

Non-polarised sunglasses still protect your eyes from harmful UV rays — and that’s vital. However, they don’t filter out glare in the same way polarised lenses do. They reduce overall brightness but won’t necessarily improve contrast or reduce reflection from surfaces.

That said, non-polarised lenses can be preferable in certain situations. For example, some LCD screens (such as some car dashboards, plane instruments, or phone screens) can appear distorted when viewed through polarised lenses.

Which Should You Choose?

If you spend a lot of time driving, near water, or outdoors, polarised sunglasses are well worth the investment. They not only make your vision more comfortable but also enhance safety by reducing glare.  For everyday wear or if you rely on digital screens frequently, non-polarised lenses can still offer excellent UV protection and style

Whichever you choose, both can be made in your prescription, so you’ll enjoy clear, comfortable vision while protecting your eyes from the harsh summer sun.
