Why Does My Eye Twitch?
An eyelid twitch (or Orbicularis Oculi Myokymia, if you want to be a smarty-pants) is a twitching or flickering of part of the orbicularis oculi muscle.
It most commonly affects the lower lid, and contractions may last for several hours and recur over a period of weeks to months.
What can cause Myokymia?
Precipitating factors for myokymia can include:
- Fatigue
- Excess caffeine
- Stress
- Corneal or conjunctival irritation (especially from an ingrown eyelash, cyst or other foreign body)
- Dry eyes
- Medication
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Refractive error
What should I do if I have Myokymia?
The good news is there is usually a spontaneous resolution, meaning it will stop of its own accord. Very rarely, there are other causes. If your symptoms do not resolve over time, or if you are concerned, please seek advice from your optometrist.
We welcome patients to our practice if you experience any symptoms relating to your eyes that are out of the norm. If you have any questions, or to book an appointment, you can call us or click here to book online.
